Fed falls to Tsonga in Montreal
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated the mighty Roger Federer once again to reach the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Thursday.
Tsonga's victory over Federer at Wimbledon, when he came from two sets behind on Centre Court, provided the most thrilling match of the tournament.
And he took another deciding set against the former world number one here in Canada, coming through a 7-6 (7/3) 4-6 6-1 winner to set up a last-eight clash with Spaniard Nicolas Almagro. Almagro defeated Tsonga's countryman Richard Gasquet 7-6 (7/5) 6-3 to progress.
Meanwhile world number one Novak Djokovic racked up his 50th victory of the year by reaching the quarter-finals with a 7-5 6-2 victory against Marin Cilic.
The top-seeded Serb broke his Croatian opponent's serve twice in the second set to improve his win record to 50-1 in 2011.
Djokovic said his success came in spite of challenging conditions on court.
"It was quite a bit different than yesterday, there was a lot of wind involved. It wasn't really a beautiful match to play and to watch," he said.
"In the right moments I was trying to keep the ball into the court, make my opponent make an unforced error. I was just more patient and played well - that's the positive."
Surprise
Djokovic also admitted he was surprised by the second-round exits of both second seed Rafael Nadaland two-time winner Andy Murray.
"It's expected from them and from all of us top players to advance, you know, to the last stages of a tournament. But it happens," he added.
"This is tennis. Both of their opponents have played great matches, and that's it. You move on. You have to forget about what you've done, there is already next week another tournament."
French fifth seed Gael Monfils awaits Djokovic in the quarter-finals after being pushed all the way by Serbian 12th seed Victor Troicki. He eventually came through 3-6 7-6 (7/0) 7-6 (7/5).
Ivan Dodig's three-set win over Rafael Nadal in the second round must have taken it out of the Croatian, as he was crushed 6-1 6-4 by Serbian Janko Tipsarevic.
Czech seventh seed Tomas Berdych overcame Croatian Ivo Karlovic 6-3 7-6 (7/2), Swiss 14th seed Stanislas Wawrinka eked out a 6-4 4-6 6-4 win over Andy
Murray's conqueror, South Africa Kevin Anderson, and American sixth seed Mardy Fish beat Latvian Ernests Gulbis 4-6 6-3 6-4.
