Top women seeds crash out of Rogers Cup in Toronto

Four of the top 10 seeds at the Rogers Cup in Toronto were eliminated on a day of upsets at the WTA Tour event.
Vera Zvonareva, seeded third, was the highest-ranked player to be eliminated at the Rexall Centre on Thursday, going down 6-4 7-6 to world number 12 Agnieszka Radwanska.
Pole Radwanska defeated Zvonareva to win the WTA tournament in Carlsbad, California last weekend and repeated the feat to seal victory in less than two hours on Thursday.
Radwanska will now face Andrea Petkovic in the last eight, after the German overcame Wimbledon champion and seventh seed Petra Kvitova.
Petkovic, 23, was rarely troubled as she broke Czech Kvitova's serve on four occasions en route to a 6-1 6-2 triumph.
Fifth seed Maria Sharapova, the woman Kvitova beat to clinch her first grand slam at the All England Club, was stunned by Kazakh qualifier Galina Voskoboeva.
Three-time grand slam champion Sharapova managed to claim a break of serve in the second set, but eventually fell 6-3 7-5.
Voskoboeva will face Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals, the fourth seed earning a comfortable 6-1 6-2 win against Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.
Australian 10th seed Samantha Stosur will play against Italy's Roberta Vinci, after she defeated French Open champion Li Na 6-2 6-4.
Vinci, ranked 22 on the Tour, advanced at the expense of Serbian former world number one Ana Ivanovic.
Francesca Schiavone was another seeded player to come up short, the Italian fifth seed was despatched 6-3 6-3 by Lucia Safarova of the Czech Republic.
Safarova, 24, will play 13-time major winner Serena Williams after the American, currently 80 in the world ranking after struggling with injury and illness, beat Zheng Jie of China.
The 29-year-old Williams battled back from one-set down to secure a 4-6 6-3 6-3 success.
