Westy questions Williams
Adam Scott has defended Steve Williams' outburst at Firestone, while Lee Westwood has questioned why he was even allowed on TV, as he defended Tiger Woods for his impact on golf as a whole.
Williams has now admitted he went a bit overboard in his greenside interview following Scott's win at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone, with a thinly veiled attack on his ex-employer Woods.
Ahead of the USPGA Championship in Atlanta, much of the talk has been surrounding Williams' comments, not only for his attack on Woods but for him taking much of the credit for Scott's fine victory.
His new boss Scott, however, was keen to play the incident down as he tries to double up and win his first major.
"Anything related to Tiger Woods is all scrutinised and blown out of proportion a lot of the time I think, and this is no different," said Scott.
"He said it was not his intention at all to do that but was asked a question and he gave an honest answer, so that's fair enough and hopefully we'll let our clubs do the talking now for the rest of the week."
Westy backs Woods
World number two Westwood has jumped to Woods' defence saying he has done huge things for the game of golf, and questioned why Williams was even allowed to make his now infamous statement.
"The only reason to put him on TV was to have a dig at Tiger Woods, stick one in his ribs," said Westwood. "There's obviously a bit of friction there. I didn't see the point in putting him on TV.
"In the game of golf we're lucky that we've had someone like Tiger come along when we have, everyone involved in the game of golf is making more money now than when Tiger wasn't on the scene."
With Woods still yet to face the media ahead of the USPGA, the row is not quite over yet, as most of his questions are bound to be concerning his former caddie.
Open champion Darren Clarke was another man to be surprised by Williams' outburst, but did not think it would put Scott off his game in Atlanta.
"I was a bit surprised yes," said Clarke. "But I don't think it will affect him this week and I'm sure he'll just want to get back to playing as well as he can and Stevie will want to caddie as well as he can this week."
