Worcestershire took a first-innings lead of 25 against Sussex on the second day of their LV= County Championship Division One match at Horsham.
Makeshift opener Joe Gatting made 71 for the home side while South African-born all-rounder Kirk Wernars hit a composed innings of 53 in what was only the 20-year-old's third first-class game.
Gatting shared a first-wicket stand of 57 with Ed Joyce before the latter departed and with Luke Wells, Gatting himself, Mike Yardy and Ben Brown all following suit, Sussex moved on to 152-5.
Wernars and Murray Goodwin then added 61 in 20 overs and the Dutch-born youngster also put on 28 with Wayne Parnell before being run out when new partner Monty Panesar drilled the ball straight to Alex Kervezee at mid-on and set off for a single - Wernars being too slow for the fielder's accurate return
Sussex once again failed to build a substantial score, with their eventual total of 265 the eighth time in their last nine innings that they have made less than 300.
Worcestershire went in again shortly before the close and reached 16 without loss, a lead of 41 going into the third day.
Day One
Worcestershire let a promising position slip as they were bowled out for 290 on the first day of their clash with Sussex at Horsham.
The visitors reached 244-4 after being put into bat but lost their final six wickets for just 46 runs as James Anyon returned figures of 4-71.
They had also made a shaky start when Anyon dismissed both Matt Pardoe and Vikram Solanki for ducks, but skipper Daryl Mitchell (66) and Moeen Ali (71) led the recovery with a third-wicket stand of 139.
Monty Panesar (3-75) made a double breakthrough by dismissing both batsmen but Alexei Kervezee (49) and 18-year-old four-day debutant Aneesh Kapil (54) contributed 88 more for the fifth wicket.
But the tide turned when Kervezee was run out by Joe Gatting when looking for a third run and the rest of the batting line-up offered scant resistance.
Sussex openers Gatting and Ed Joyce successfully batted out the last six overs of the day to leave the hosts on 16-0 at the close.
