Gloucs forced to follow on Empty Gloucs forced to follow on

Hamish Marshall was dismissed shortly before stumps as Gloucestershire were forced to follow on against Derbyshire.

Asked to bat again after being dismissed for 220, some 193 runs behind, the visitors closed on 7-1 after Derbyshire had made 413 earlier in the day.

That total was not what the hosts would have hoped for after resuming on 329-4, but they lost the last six wickets for 84 after centurion Wes Durston was bowled by Jon Lewis in the first over of the day.

Will Gidman ran through the middle order, finishing with 6-92, giving his side hopes of staying in touch with their opponents.

But Tim Groenewald removed both openers in his first four overs with the new ball and the wickets continued to fall, Jonathan Clare taking 3-19 including both Gidman brothers.

Total disaster was averted though, thanks to the efforts of Richard Coughtree, who finished with 54 not out and compiled several useful partnerships with the tail.

From a perilous 92-7, Coughtree took the score to 220 and put on 68 with David Payne for the 10th wicket - Greg Smith finally having Payne stumped for 38.

Marshall, who went for a duck in the first innings, made three before suffering the indignity of being removed for a second time in the day, edging Clare to wicketkeeper Luke Sutton for three just before the close.

Day One

Martin Guptill and Wes Durston dented Gloucestershire's promotion hopes with a double century stand to put Derbyshire on top at Derby.

The third wicket pair both scored centuries to dominate a rain-hit opening day after Gloucestershire had reduced the home side to 29-2.

Guptill ended a lean run with his first Championship century, while Durston celebrated a new two-year contract by scoring a career-best unbeaten 151.

The visitors paid a high price for a dropped catch when Durston was on 39, as the pair set a new Derbyshire third-wicket record against Gloucestershire of 266 in 53 overs.

Guptill eventually fell for 143 when he sliced a drive to point and although Greg Smith went without scoring in the same over, Derbyshire closed on 329-4.

Alex Gidman's decision to bowl first on a green tinged pitch had looked a good one when Wayne Madsen and Chesney Hughes were dismissed cheaply.

Madsen battled through the first 12 overs only to miss a straight one from Will Gidman and was leg before for 10. Hughes then edged a lifting ball from David Payne to Cockbain at third slip.
