Luis Suarez believes Liverpool are capable of challenging for the Premier League title in 2011/12.

The Reds have finished outside of the top four in the last two seasons, with a seventh-place finish followed by a sixth-place finish.

Liverpool have also been forced to watch on helplessly as arch-rivals Manchester United have surpassed their tally of top flight titles.

It is now 21 years since the Reds took that prize, with a painful period without league success allowing United to edge ahead of them in the all-time honours list.

There is, however, a feeling around Anfield that the tide could be about to turn, with Kenny Dalglish returned to the managerial hot-seat and American owners showing their ambition in the transfer market.

A summer shopping splurge during the current window has seen Liverpool splash out around £45million on Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson.

That outlay can be added to the considerable investment made in January, as Suarez and Andy Carroll were drafted in to help cover the loss of Fernando Torres to Chelsea.

The Reds have certainly signalled their intent ahead of the new campaign and New Year arrival Suarez, who caught the eye last season, sees no reason why Dalglish's side cannot be among the frontrunners.

"At Liverpool we always dream about being Premier League champions," he told the Daily Star Sunday.

"We know, of course, that it's a very difficult league to win and very competitive. There are a lot of teams who want to be champions.

"But now we have a squad of quality. We trust our manager and we trust each other as team-mates. We are confident about that.

"We have the ability and I think Liverpool certainly should be aiming to finish among the Champions League places. Then there is always that dream, a little dream, about actually winning the Premier League.

"Maybe not playing in the Europa League this year will really help us. We will be able to focus on the league and on getting as high up the table as possible."
