Webber holds off charging Hamilton for German pole
Mark Webber of Australia will start Sunday's German Grand Prix on pole position after a thrilling final qualifying session at Nurburgring.
Webber clocked a time of one minute 30.079 seconds but was nearly pipped for top spot on the grid by Britain's Lewis Hamilton, who finished just 0.05 seconds slower.
Hamilton's effort in the McLaren, which he described as "wicked", knocked runaway title leader and defending champion Sebastian Vettel off the front row for the first time this season in his Red Bull.
But Vettel's 34-year-old teammate reveled on a track he clearly likes after winning there two years ago.
"My form has been getting better and this track's not been too bad for me in the past," Webber told the official post-qualifying press conference.
"The boys did a great job on the car -- there were some late nights in the lead up to here but we got it together in the end. After my lap I thought that if someone gets me they deserve it because I was at my limit and it was a great lap."
Hamilton was delighted by the improved performance of his car after recent indifferent results.
"I really must thank and congratulate my team. The upgrades this weekend -- updates and improvements to engine modes -- have been arriving all the time and they have helped massively."
Vettel, who has never won on home soil, was third fastest ahead of two-time champion Fernando Alonso whose Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa was fifth.
Nico Rosberg took sixth for Mercedes ahead of the second McLaren of Jenson Button.
Adrian Sutil for Force India, Vitaly Petrov in the Lotus Renault and home legend Michael Schumacher in his Mercedes rounded out the top 10 in qualifying.
