BIG Win Danish Industrial Project

World-renowned architectural firm BIG have been announced the winner of an international competition to design a new waste to energy plant for the Danish city of Copenhagen.
Having beaten off 36 other competitors including Wilkinson Eyre Architects, Dominique Perrault Architecture and local rivals 3xN, it was their unique design to turn what could have been an industrial eyesore into a tourist attraction that secured unanimous votes from the competitions judging panel.
Located in an industrial estate close to the city centre, the project is the single largest of its kind in Denmark and will replace the 40 year old Amagerforbraending plant.
Instead of just coming up with a prettier than average factory the roof space has been turned into a ski slope catering to various skill levels for the residents and visitors to the city to enjoy.
In keeping with the energy efficiency theme the slope is constructed from recycled synthetic materials and will be accessed by an elevator which runs along the plants smoke stack where visitors will be able to have a nosey at the inner workings of the factory before getting off at the observation deck and enjoying stunning views of the city.
The sides of the factory are wrapped in a green façade created from planter modules that are stacked to give the building a mountainous look from a distance while the surrounding area will be sculpted to create a park where people can participate in all things sporty like formal speed walking.
To keep planet hugging in the forefront of the cities mind the smoke stack of the factory has been special designed blow out smoke rings whenever a tonne of co2 gas is released, at night these will be lit up by lasers creating little bits of aerial artwork and once and for all proving that being able to blow smoke rings is cool.
All being well the factory and slope should be up and running by 2016.
